Managing Headline Stress
Hey, it's Dave Denniston with Centurion Financial Strategies, and today, let's talk about staying focused. There's all this noise, all these headlines, all this new stuff—the news is so emotionally draining sometimes. So I want to talk a little bit today about how to apply helpful behavioral strategies to prevent this spiral of negativity from wrecking your peace, your joy, your mindset, and—beyond all else, of course—your financial goals, and to keep you on track.
Now, let's be honest here. Let's face it: we're surrounded today by intense negative news. You scroll on your phone, right? You see Google or whatever news provider vibe—maybe you're looking on Facebook or YouTube—and guess what gets reactions? Negativity. We're so inundated with information today, especially through social media and news headlines that are designed to get an emotional reaction out of us.
And guess what? Not only there, but in finances, right? CNBC, Bloomberg, and some of these places often seem to want to cause stress and uncertainty about your finances.
So let's talk about three strategies to help you stay calm and focused on what's important. There's been research done that shows when you're constantly exposed to negative news—it's like doom scrolling—it can significantly impact your mentality and mental health overall.
So what can we do about it?
Well, let's reduce notifications. Maybe we need to mute sources that increase our stress and that gut-wrenching feeling. Have you ever thought about deleting certain apps? Maybe you should unfollow certain accounts. Maybe we just need to set a limit for how much time we spend consuming social media or other news sources. There are some cool apps out there that can help you do that nowadays.
The other thing, besides just talking about negative stuff, is what about positive things? What can we do to redirect our energy and focus on positive things? Whether it's spending time with our kids or grandkids, engaging in a hobby, or getting out into nature—going for walks and enjoying being outside—helping others can alleviate stress, add positivity and joy to the world, break that cycle, and instead bring relief and joy through things that are ultimately meaningful to us.
I would also suggest, hey, let's seek healthy connections.
Whether it's talking to people who have our back or reassuring friends or family, we can reduce interactions with people and things that heighten our stress. I'm certainly here to assist and to help you when you need that.
And let's be honest—we can't escape the headlines. We can't escape the barrage of negative news. And we do need to understand what's happening in the world. But I also want to say: we have the power to control our reactions. We have the power to set boundaries on our consumption habits.
So, my friends, just take a deep breath. Refocus. Remember: you are not alone. We're in this together, navigating these challenges.
